Witchy Women of History

Dion Fortune b. December 6th 1890, d. January 8th 1946

Born in Wales, Dion Fortune (born Violet Mary Firth) was an influential occult writer and member of various magical and esoteric groups, including the Theosophical Society and the Golden Dawn. Fortune studied psychology and psychoanalysis at the University of London, and made a living as a psychiatrist. However, she is best remembered for her writings on Hermetic Qabalah and psychic protection, and for founding the Society of the Inner Light. Fortune claimed to be clairvoyant and clairaudient, and she came to be respected for her psychism. She was well-known within occult circles of her day, and it’s said that Aleister Crowley attempted to draw her into his order, but was unsuccessful.

Fortune wrote more than 20 books, fictional and non-, with both kinds centered around esoterica. Her fictional works touch on topics such as Atlantis, spell-crafting, and astral projection, and she saw this as her way to bring magical knowledge to the general public.

Her later fictional works are also useful ritual references, Moon Magic in particular. The Art of Psychic Self-Defense and The Mystical Qabalah are regarded as her non-fiction masterpieces, with the former being almost a prerequisite for anyone studying the occult arts.

To me, a witch is a woman that is capable of letting her intuition take hold of her actions, that communes with her environment, that isn’t afraid of facing challenges.

2012 Pagan Reading Challenge

I have been considering hosting a pagan reading challenge ever since I started this blog. My collection of books on spirituality, magick, and the occult have grown to an unmanagable size. I tend to read bits and pieces of each book but never quite read the entire thing, I am hoping this challenge will change that.

The Rules:
This challenge will begin January 1, 2012 and end December 31, 2012.

Books read between now and January 1, 2012 will not count.

Books that can be counted will include nonfiction books that are about spirituality, magick, the occult, nature, myths, or the paranormal. They can be reference, how to, informative, encyclopedias, or memoir. Fictional books that can be counted are anything that has to do with the paranormal, magick, witchcraft, or have a distinctly pagan flavor to the story such as The Divine Sisters of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood by Rebecca Wells.

You may include books of any format including traditional books, ebooks, or audiobooks.

You may reread books.

Reference books are not usually read cover to cover so I will bend the rules here. You do not have to read the book from cover to cover, but you do have to look at EVERY page in the book.

Choose a level. Levels may be changed throughout the year.
Novice Read 1 - 5 books
Initiate Read 5 -10 books
Beginner Read 11 - 15 books
Intermediate Read 16 - 20 books
Advanced Read 21 - 25 books
Adept Read 26 -30 books
High Priest/Priestess Read 31 - 35 books
Elder Read Read 36 or more books

Get Off Your Broom: A New Years’s Witchy Fitness Challenge

The first ever Get Off Your Broom: A Witchy Fitness Challenge was so successful that I would like to invite you to the next round which is called the Get Off Your Broom: A New Year’s Witchy Fitness Challenge!

I created this fitness challenge because I realized there are probably plenty of of other pagans, witches, and Wiccans out there that are struggling to get in shape too. We need to support each other! I call the fitness challenge “get off your broom” because as witches and pagans, we need to get off our brooms (metaphorically of course) and exercise!

I had no idea if I would gain any interest in the first ever Get Off Your Broom: A Witchy Fitness Challenge so imagine my delightful surprise when 160 people signed up! God/dess bless all of you! However, I started the challenge at a very odd time of the year. Not many people start a fitness routine and diet at the beginning of October. Because this next round starts on the first of the year, I am hoping for even more people to sign up than last time. It will last 3 months just like the first challenge did.

IMPORTANT CHANGES FOR THE NEXT ROUND OF GET OFF YOUR BROOM: A WITCHY FITNESS CHALLENGE!

Check-ins will be on Sunday when the new round starts.

The informational page and where you sign up has changed. DO NOT SIGN UP ON THIS POST!! I have moved sign ups HERE to a seperate page on the blog which can be found at the top of my sidebar. If you want to share the link for the challenge, please us that link. You can also click on the Get Off Your Broom: A New Year’s Witchy Fitness Challenge banner and it will take you to the sign up page.

Please note that the informational and sign up page may even be temporary because many of you like the fitness challenge but would prefer it to be on a separate blog.

I NEED YOU TO VOTE ON WHERE YOU WANT THE FITNESS CHALLENGE TO CONTINUE!

I know this is all kind of confusing, but I want people to be able to sign up to participate now so they can plan for the challenge. IF and that’s a big if…people vote to have the challenge moved to its own blog, it will be up and running by January 1st. The name of the blog will be Get Off Your Broom: A Witchy Fitness Blog. It has a nice ring to it, doesn’t it? I almost hope people vote to move the challenge.

A recap all the informatation about the New Year’s round of Get Off Your Broom: A Witchy Fitness Challenge and the sign ups will be found HERE!

pagan-depot:

A Yule log is a large and extremely hard log which is burned in the hearth as a part of traditional Yule or Christmas celebrations in several European cultures. It can be a part of the Winter Solstice festival or the Twelve Days of Christmas, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, or Twelfth Night.

The expression “Yule log” has also come to refer to log-shaped Christmas cakes, also known as “chocolate logs” or Bûche de Noël. The Yule log is related to other Christmas and Yuletide traditions such as the Ashen faggot

The Goddess is Afoot: Top 10 must have herbs

goddessisafoot:

Top 10 must have herbs

Everyone is entitled to there own opinion on what they need in the way of herbs, but for me personally, these are always the 10 that are in everyones.

1. Mint
magical properties: strength, luck, money, and healing. These are probley the reasons they are always in a herb collection. They are eaisly grown in many climates, and can be made into various items fro consumption such as teas or baked into cookies. This makes using mint very easy.

2. Cinnamon
Magical properties: Energy, love, passion, prosperity, and protection. This is used in a lot of love spells or spell used involving someone you love. This, again, is very easy to use in kitchen witchery. It is also very easy to get a hold of,  I personally am drawn to cinnamon.

3. Rosemary
Magical properties: Cleansing, courage, knowledge, rituals, memory, and protection. This, again, is grown eaisly in a variety of places. Rosemary is a very basic herb used in many, MANY rituals. One of its stated magical properties is basically “good in rituals”. I really recommend that everyone have some of this somewhere at hand.

4.Mugwort
Magical properties:associated with the moon, dreams, and psychic powers. I like to used it with and full moon rituals because it is specifically associated to the lunar goddess.

5. Sage
Magical properties: cleansing, purification and psychic development and proctecion. This is eaisly accesible. It is used with lavender for alot of purification spells. It is also a huge herb for psychic skills such as astral projection and divination.

6. Lavender
Magical properties: cleansing, happiness, healing, and purification. This is used in quite a few cleansing spells (combined with sage). It also seems to be a kind of general herb that is a good use in many things. It also grows eaisly and smells great for healing satchels.

7. Marigold
Magical properties: dreams, protection, and psychic powers. Gives good visionary sight. I’m not sure why I find this in everyones herb box :P

8. Thyme
Magical properties: clairvoyance, dreams, prevents nightmares, meditaion, and divination. This is a very sleep/dream orieanted herb. I like it alot for anything that has to do with sleep and dreams. Not as eaisly accesible as some, but still not too hard.

9. Ginger
Magical properties: Love, money, success, and power. This is good for any spell used for to gain achievment, or success, etc.. Very useful. Also easy to find.

10. Personal Connection
Everyone has a herb that they feel drawn to, this can be put into any spell or ritual regardless of magical properties because you have such a deep connection to it. You’ll know it when you find it. :)

I have always loved Persephone but really felt like she became my patron goddess when my husband died suddenly in a car accident five years ago.
